1. When do puppy/kitten vaccines begin?
    Vaccines begin at 6 to 7 weeks of age.

2. Why are vaccines so important?
    The purpose of a vaccination program is to build a strong and rapidly reactive immune system, which will protect an animal against infectious diseases or at least limit their symptoms.

3. At what age can cats be declawed?
    You can have your cat declawed as early as 12 weeks old.

4. What is the average recovery time after my cat has been declawed?
    Recovery time depends on many factors such as how old is the cat, how much does the cat weigh and how active is the cat. This can be any were from a couple of days to several weeks.

5. When do you recommend a male cat/dog be neutered?
    We recommend 9 months old.

6. When do you recommend a female cat/dog be spayed?
    We recommend 6 months old.

7. How long can a female cat be in heat?
    A female cat or dog can stay in heat for approximately 3 weeks.

8. How long is an animal's gestation period?
    On average about 63 to 65 days.

9. Why does my pets breath smell bad?
    Bad breath can be a sign of periodontal disease, an abscess in the mouth or a foreign body.

10. Why do I need to brush my pet's teeth?
    Much like people, brushing decreases the amount of plaque and tarter that can accumulate on the teeth.

11. Should I feed canned or dry food?
    Dry food is preferred because it can decrease plaque and tarter build up on the teeth. Where as canned food adheres to the teeth and gums.

12. Why is it so important to not feed my pet table scrapes?
    Any variation from the normal diet can cause gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea and/or vomiting and should be avoided. Feeding tables scrapes can also cause excessive weight gain.

13. Why is having bloodwork done so important even if my pet is not severely sick?
    Diagnostic testing is the most sensitive and accurate method of early detection of subclinical health problems and having baseline values available while the pet is healthy can be useful in the future.

14. Why do animals shake their heads?
    An animal shaking their head can be signs of a possible ear infection, insect inside the ear or a foreign body.

15. Why does my pet eat grass?
    Sometimes an upset stomach can cause an animal to eat grass.

16. Why is my cat not using the litter box?
    Inappropriate elimination can be due to metabolic disorders, such as urinary infection or can possibly be a behavioral issue. Medical diagnosis would be appropriate to rule any of these out.

17. Why is my older dog slow to get up and/or not as active?
    Older animals can sometimes get arthritis just as people do which is why maintaining a healthy weight is very important. Nsaids can be prescribed to alleviate the discomfort.

18. Why does my pet scoot across the carpet?
    A number of factors can cause this problem such as loose stool, irritation or anal sacs have become impacted, all of which can be treated.

19. How will I know when it is time to trim my pets nails?
    When the nail has extended beyond the pad, curled nails, broken nails or if the nails are getting stuck in the carpet. Frequent nail trims can help maintain a short length.

20. What do I do if I trim a nail to short and it starts bleeding?
    Apply pressure to the nail with a cloth, if the bleeding continues you can use flour, cornstarch or a steptic pencil on the bleeding nail.

21. Why is my pet scratching if I don't see any fleas?
    Contact allergies such as grass and/or food allergies can cause itchy skin.

22. Why do I have fleas if my pets don't go outside?
    You may have fleas from neighborhood animals, your yard or you may have carried them in on your body, at which point they will be seeking a blood meal.

23. Why are over the counter flea controls not recommended by my veterinarian?
    The active ingredient in most OTC flea controls is permethrins which can be toxic or even fatal.
